The European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) is a key driver of Europe's transition to a hydrogen-powered future. Established to boost investment in sustainable hydrogen production and reduce reliance on Russian fossil fuels, the EHB plays a vital role in Europe's strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. With an ambitious target to produce 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen domestically by 2030, alongside importing another 10 million tons, the EHB is set to reshape the hydrogen landscape across Europe.
Building on the success of the first hydrogen auction, a second round is anticipated to be launched by the end of 2024. This innovative initiative is designed to expand the production of renewable hydrogen within the European Economic Area (EEA). Supported by a 1.2 billion euro investment, with a special focus on maritime applications, this auction seeks to narrow the cost gap between renewable and fossil-based hydrogen, thereby enhancing the economic feasibility of renewable hydrogen.
